On 25 November 2025, Moldova State University hosted a national roundtable entitled “The Role of the European Union in Addressing Global Challenges”, organised within the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair project “EU’s Role in the Emerging International System” (EUREIS), No. 101126798. The event took place in Room 301 of the university’s main building, starting at 13:15.
The roundtable brought together students from the Faculties of Economic Sciences; Letters; and Psychology, Educational Sciences, Sociology and Social Work, enrolled in the Russian-taught “European Integration” course (a university-wide elective). These students had chosen to deepen their understanding of the European Union’s role in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Through its interactive format, the event sought to strengthen students’ analytical skills and promote European values and principles among young people.
The roundtable opened with welcoming remarks from the organisers, followed by an overview of the agenda and the educational and academic objectives of the event. The discussion was moderated by Dr Liliana Beniuc, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Chair EUREIS project, who emphasised the importance of integrating the European dimension into university curricula and engaging students in academic debates on practical issues.
During the presentation session, students explored the EU’s role in addressing global challenges from various disciplinary perspectives. Topics included:
• The European Union’s model of economic governance;
• The EU as an international security actor and its contribution to maintaining international security;
• The importance of the Eastern Partnership for the European Union and the Republic of Moldova;
• The distinctive features of EU–NATO cooperation;
• The objectives and priorities of EU gender equality policy;
• The European Union’s role as a global defender of human rights and democracy.
The presentations highlighted how the European Union responds to challenges related to international security, the defence of democratic order, the protection of human rights, the reduction of inequalities, and the strengthening of partnerships with countries in the Eastern Neighbourhood, including the Republic of Moldova. Students emphasised the interdependence between the EU’s internal policies and its global role, as well as the tangible impact of European policies on societies in partner countries.
The event concluded with a discussion and a session of closing reflections, followed by the presentation of certificates of participation and certificates of merit to the most active students.
The organisers emphasised that such activities help foster an academic culture grounded in dialogue, critical thinking, and an understanding of the complexity of European and international processes.
The roundtable on “The Role of the European Union in Addressing Global Challenges” forms part of a series of educational and academic activities organised under the Jean Monnet Chair EUREIS project, which aims to strengthen the European dimension in higher education and encourage young people to engage in analysing the EU’s role in the emerging international system.
